Copperhaven to Receive Two Additional Modular Classrooms

April 10, 2024 - The community may notice some construction activity on school property soon. Copperhaven School is set to receive two additional modular classrooms. Alberta Infrastructure has approved the relocation of two modular classrooms from the site of the now-closed Stony Plain Central School to Copperhaven.

By relocating the modular classrooms, Copperhaven School subtly bolsters its capacity to provide flexible and dynamic educational programming. This development is particularly timely given a recent attendance area review, which has redistributed student enrolment, particularly in the City of Spruce Grove. Currently, the school operates with approximately 100 students below its full capacity, and the addition of the modular units will allow for more efficient space utilization and programming flexibility, catering to both current and future students.

The two classrooms built in 2007 will find their new location on the back (south) side of the Copperhaven School.

“This region's growth necessitates thoughtful planning and resource allocation to ensure educational facilities keep pace with community needs,” explained Superintendent Shauna Boyce.

"It is essential that we anticipate and adapt to the educational demands of one of Spruce Grove's fastest-growing areas, doing so in a way that is both sustainable and responsive. The moving of the modular classrooms coincides with the imminent demolition of the old Stony Plain Central School which will effectively conclude the Land Swap agreement that PSD had with the Town of Stony Plain on that property."

The modular classrooms are anticipated to be ready for use by the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, marking a significant step in the school's ability to accommodate educational needs in a growing community. This initiative not only underscores PSD's dedication to providing quality education but also its adaptability in the face of demographic changes. The province has confirmed they will pay for what they deem as reasonable costs for the relocation of the classrooms.
