Attendance Area Change (McLaughlin Neighbourhood Redesignated)

June 22, 2022 -

Dear Parents/Guardians of Copperhaven School,

We just wanted to provide you with a quick update from the Division that will ultimately have an impact on Copperhaven School attendance. As you may be aware, Parkland School Division (PSD) embarked on an attendance area review of all schools in PSD in order to facilitate long-term planning and the effective use of our school facilities. Population demographics continue to shift with the communities of Spruce Grove, Stony Pain and Parkland County.

In particular, Copperhaven is nearing attendance capacity and that needs to be addressed. As well, the newly modernized and expanded Woodhaven Middle School needs to be filled.  After an extensive utilization study, additional research and community consultation, the Board of Trustees, in combination with other Attendance Area adjustments, approved the following recommendation at their Regular Board Meeting, June 21st. (Keep in mind, these changes come into effect for the 2023-2024 school year and not this upcoming fall:

That the Spruce Grove community of McLaughlin be re-designated to the Brookwood School and Woodhaven Middle School attendance boundaries, effective the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. Further, that any current, affected students who will be in Grades 7-9 at Copperhaven School in 2023-2024 school year be permitted to remain at Copperhaven School (legacy) until they complete Grade 9, and that their families are not assigned school-of-choice fees for those students who legacy and require transportation to Copperhaven School.

Watch the Board’s debate and decision here:

Additional information will be shared directly with affected families.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we would like to thank everyone for their respectful participation in the consultation and engagement process.

Shauna Boyce
Superintendent, Parkland School Division
